Antique Black Wash

Best way to clean an antique oak Bureau?

I recently brought this very old solid oak antique Bureau.I dusted it and then applied a little polish (silicone free), however I noticed a lot of black coming off on the duster. The oak also looks quite dull so I presume there is a build up on there, possibly of wax and dirt? I may have made the situation worse by putting more wax on!

A friend suggest that I should wash the oak with warm water and add a little vinegar to the water? Is this the best thing to do?

Hi Rhianna. I’d try some olive oil on a dry cloth to work the ‘dirt’ out then rub off as much as possible with a clean dry cloth before waxing (though try it on a inconspicuous area first). You may find that Briwax may be helpful. We use it on our dark indian furniture. You can get various shades. It is a furniture wax with a slight added stain so if you buy it to match the wood it won’t actually change the colour of the wood but will hide and small areas of damage. Good luck! xx

The Wash $16.08 Description Rich in river imagery and an intense sense of the passage of time, The Wash explores the incessant music that permeates journeys with a destination unknown. Interweaving the voices of John Clare, Audubon, Roethke, and others, the poems depict a landscape of loss in which language and images provide the only concrete platform on which to stand. Ending with an elegy for the self-portrait and an acceptance of the inevitability of decay, the speaker discovers "the stillness of frames both comforts and terrifies." Playing a lyrical voice against the limits of silence, The Wash uncovers the voices that can be made, and heard, in and out of nature.
