Bath Beach Cotton

all of a sudden, my cotton towels smell like metal. I can’t figure out where it is coming from.?

Any suggestions? We have a new water heater, and a new kitchen with granite counters, and a stainless steel sink. It only happens with beach, bath, and kitchen towels. All of them are cotton. have tried baking soda, vinegar, and so on. works for a while, but then the smell comes back. It is so bad, you have to wash your hands two or three times after handling them. I am at a loss.
we don’t have hard or well water here, so no need for softener. always done laundry the same way for 18 yrs., no problems. other cotton textiles do not have this “metallic problem” God bless whoever can give us insight . This is definitely a WIERD one. Location is northern Il. Burbs of chi-town

Do you have a water softener? In my parents household there was a problem with too much iron in the water thus resulting in the metal smell but it was a lot less noticeable when we put the water softener in . It might be more prevalent with the cotton materials. But maybe with a new water heater, that may be your problem but it’ll wear off after a bit.
