Shower faucet installation problem . . . any great plumbers out there?

We’ve just (nearly) completed a total re-do of our bathroom. My husband was preparing to install the new shower fixtures and unfortunately, the installation hardware is recessed slightly too far into the wall for the faucet handle to connect. It’s an American Standard pressure balancing bath & Shower Set. I checked online, but AS apparently doesn’t have an extension part. Does anyone know of a good way to lengthen the assembly that doesn’t involve knocking out the drywall from the room behind? Obviously, we don’t want to knock out the newly installed tile, but even if we access the fittings from behind, it’s still going to be difficult to get to the shower hardware (those darn 2x4s!). HELP!!!

It sounds like you roughed-in the spindle to far into the wall.
You can get longer screws for your trim plate, but if it’s in deep enough to keep you from putting the handle on, it looks like you are indeed going in the wall to correct the rough-in.
