Bonsai Forest

How should I grow this Bonsai?
When I form a Schaffer bonsai, how should the trunk look? I bought this Schefflera from the garden center of a hardware store. I want to say it looks as if there are four stems or four plants in one pot. How would I turn 4 stems into one bonsai? Do I take each plant apart and grow them separately or Do I smash all the stems into one main trunk? What should I do? I want this to look like a great tree not a forest. The stem looks like this look straight down at the pot.
……….S……….
…….S….S…….
……….S……….
Picture each S a stem and its in a round pot
Your best bet is to separate them this summer, not now.
Keep it in full sun, outside if possible as long as the temp is above 45 degrees.
You will have to wait at least 2 years after potting to see what you have. Make sure and place them in a big shallow pot. Soil needs to be 50% expanded shale, 50% landscape mix. Water should run out as fast as you pour it in. The idea is to get lots of air and water over roots.
I have 3 very nice plants that I picked up after someone threw them away, so avoided 5 years of waiting. Your best material will come from someone throwing out unwanted plants.
Good luck and go drink a beer.

The Dawn Redwood is a true Redwood and like our Redwoods, they are a living fossil, an isolated “relic” species from a long time ago when there were vast forests of them. Seeds were introduced in the U.S. in 1948, and they have become increasingly popular as an ornamental tree. The foliage is more lacey than our native Redwood and unlike our native Redwood, they are deciduous. In the fall the light green sprays turn yellow, then bronze, and fall off. Only the Larches do that. Keep outdoors |
