Questions regarding estimates for a new AC unit (none currently installed)?

I’ve gotten several estimates for the installation of an AC until, with a range of $1000 difference between the highest and lowest. I know nothing about AC, so some advice would be helpful.
1) How much of a difference is there really between brands (Carrier, Lennox, Bryant, Goodman) as it leads to some significant cost differences?
2) Only one guy even looked at the duct for the air return. He said that the return duct work would need replaced because it is too small for a 2.5 ton unit. No one else looked. Is this normal?
3) Some want to replace the thermostat, others don’t. Is something like this really necessary or useful?
4) What are other important things to consider?

i would be looking for references from all companies and would call the references and ask were they on time were they neat etc than make a decision also talk to people who already have air for references
