What is clogging my shower drain?

My roommate told me her shower drain seems to be clogged, and I’ve tried a couple things to fix it. I tried digging around with a straightened clothes hanger for hair, but didn’t really come up with anything. I tried pouring boiling water down the drain, with no improvement. I did the old salt and baking soda mixed with white vinegar trick, followed by plunging and pouring boiling water down. Still nothing. I did see some fairly large white flakes floating around, as well as some rust colored ones, which led me to believe it could be lime or some other mineral build up. I tried CLR, but STILL the clog remained.

My last option before calling a plumber is to borrow a snake from my friend, but considering how poorly everything else has worked, I’m not sure this will even work.

Any ideas on what the clog could be, and what I should try to clear it up? The nearby toilet and sink seem fine, so the clog has got to be close to the drain entry.

Your problem is most likely hair in the trap. The “easy” fix is to drop the trap and clean it out if you’re fortunate enough to have access from the underside. A snake can do the job if this is a “shower only” installation but it’s not always possible to make the turn with a snake if you’ve got a tub/shower setup. if it is a tub/shower, a plunger won’t do any good unless you take the overflow plate off and block the hole.

Home improvement stores carry a chemical that will dissolve blockages made by hair, soap scum and grease, it’s generally in a black bottle, many times with a bag around it. If you use it, read the directions and be careful, it’s essentially concentrated lye and can cause “eruptions” that can severely burn you if you’re splashed.
