The best way to prep a cabinet for refinishing?

I would like to re-stain my kitchen cabinets but have been hearing a lot of different options. They are veneered, not solid hardwood, so I know I need to be careful when sanding. They are currently a generic golden oak and I would like to give them some more life by staining (NOT painting) them a darker espresso color. How should I go about the prep part? Should I go with a liquid sander (which it sounds like is only really good for painting) or try to tough it out by hand sanding? I’m very hesitant to try hand sanding since I’m afraid of going though the veneer.

I’d be hesitant to attempt stripping and restaining unless they were solid hardwood. The factory finish is a bear to sand off, and even taking them in and having them dipped doesn’t work too well. Are the face frames wood, or are they veneer as well? You can get new doors, and sand and stain the frames it they are solid wood. Otherwise, I’d recommend painting them. It’s cheaper and a lot fewer headaches. Hope this helps.
