Planet India $11.99 India is everywhere: on magazine covers and cinema marquees, at the gym and in the kitchen, in corporate boardrooms and on Capitol Hill. Through incisive reportage and illuminating analysis, Mira Kamdar explores India’s astonishing transformation from a developing country into a global powerhouse. She takes us inside India, reporting on the people, companies, and policies defining the new India and revealing how it will profoundly affect our future — financially, culturally, politically. The world’s fastest-growing democracy, India has the youngest population on the planet, and a middle class as big as the population of the entire United States. Its market has the potential to become the world’s largest. As one film producer told Kamdar when they met in New York, “Who needs the American audience? There are only 300 million people here.” Not only is India the ideal market for the next new thing, but with a highly skilled English-speaking workforce, elite educational institutions, and growing foreign investment, India is emerging as an innovator of the technology that is driving the next phase of the global economy. While India is celebrating its meteoric rise, it is also racing against time to bring the benefits of the twenty-first century to the 800 million Indians who live on less than two dollars per day, to find the sustainable energy to fuel its explosive economic growth, and to navigate international and domestic politics to ensure India’s security and its status as a global power. India is the world in microcosm: the challenges it faces are universal — from combating terrorism, poverty, and disease to protecting the environment and creating jobs. The urgency of these challenges for India is spurring innovative solutions, which will catapult it to the top of the new world order. If India succeeds, it will not only save itself, it will save us all. If it fails, we will all suffer. As goes India, so goes the world. Mira Kamdar tells the dramatic story of a nation in the midst of redefining itself and our world. Provocative, timely, and essential, Planet India is the groundbreaking book that will convince Americans just how high the stakes are — what there is to lose, and what there is to gain from India’s meteoric rise. DID YOU KNOW? • India is the world’s fourth-largest economy. • By 2034, India will be the most populous country on Earth, with 1.6 billion people. • India’s middle class is already larger than the entire population of the United States. • One out of three of the world’s malnourished children live in India. • India is home to the biggest youth population on earth: 600 million people are under the age of 25. • 72,000,000 cell phones will be sold in India in 2007. • India just edged past the United States to become the second-most-preferred destination for foreign direct investment after China. • In 1991, Indians purchased 150,000 automobiles; |

GovernorGeneral of India $164.1 The GovernorGeneral of India (or, from 1858 to 1947, the Viceroy and GovernorGeneral of India) was the head of the British administration in India, and later, after Indian independence, the representative of the monarch and de facto head of state. The office was created in 1773, with the title of GovernorGeneral of the Presidency of Fort William. The officer had direct control only over Fort William, but supervised other British East India Company officials in India. Complete authority over all of British India was granted in 1833, and the official became known as the GovernorGeneral of India. In 1858, the territories of the East India Company came under the direct control of the British Crown. The GovernorGeneral headed the central Government of India which administered the Provinces of British India, including the Punjab, Bengal, Bombay, Madras, the United Provinces, and others. However, much of India was not ruled directly by the British government: outside the provinces of British India there were hundreds of nominally sovereign princely states or native states, whose relationship was not with the British government, but directly with the monarch. India in Africa, Africa in India $21.2 India in Africa, Africa in India traces the longstanding interaction between these two regions, showing that the Indian Ocean world provides many examples of cultural flows that belie our understanding of globalization as a recent phenomenon. This region has had, and continues to have, an internal integrity that touches the lives of its citizens in their commerce, their cultural exchanges, and their concepts of each other and of themselves in the world. These connections have deep historical roots, and their dynamics are not attributable solely to the effects of European colonialism, modernity, or contemporary globalization — although these forces have left their mark. The contributors to this interdisciplinary volume come from the fields of history, literature, dance, sociology, gender studies, and religion, making this collection unique in its recreation of an entire world too seldom considered as such. |

India Divided $12.95 In India Divided, environmental, human rights, and antiglobalization activist Vandana Shiva chronicles the internal battles of a nation that is both the world’s largest democracy and a leading nuclear power. Shiva describes a society where traditional cultures collide with the new economy of globalization, and charts the course of India’s war of fundamentalisms in the age of terror. From the IT centers of Bangalore to the villages of Uttar Pradesh, from the massacre at Gujarat and the popular emergence of Hindutva’s narrow communalism to the decades-old battle for Kashmir, India Divided reveals a convergence of globalization and terrorism. Looking to the plights of India’s Dalit communities and millions of poor subsistence farmers impoverished or displaced by biotechnology, seed patents, and the spate of mega-dam projects, Shiva argues that these silent killers form a local terror unmatched in devastation. In India Divided Shiva addresses India’s most urgent threats with gravity and hope. |

Growing Stories from India $40 The costs of industrial agriculture are astonishing in terms of damage to the environment, human health, animal suffering, and social equity, and the situation demands that we expand our ecological imagination to meet this crisis. In response to growing dissatisfaction with the existing food system, farmers and consumers are creating alternate models of production and consumption that are both sustainable and equitable. In Growing Stories from India: Religion and the Fate of Agriculture, author A. Whitney Sanford uses the story of the deity Balaram and the Yamuna River as a foundation for discussing the global food crisis and illustrating the Hindu origins of agrarian thought. By employing narrative as a means of assessing modern agriculture, Sanford encourages us to reconsider our relationship with the earth. Merely creating new stories is not enough — she asserts that each story must lead to changed practices. Growing Stories from India demonstrates that conventional agribusiness is only one of many options and engages the work of modern agrarian luminaries to explore how alternative agricultural methods can be implemented. |

Central banking is the responsibility of the Reserve Bank of India, which in 1935 formally took over these responsibilities from the then Imperial Bank of India, relegating it to commercial banking functions. Consumer India $24.95 A richly insightful account of one of the most significant transformations in the world today. Dheeraj Sinha’s intelligence vividly illuminates the intersection of culture and commerce in New India. Adam Morgan Founder eatbigfish Among the many books I have read on the cultural evolution taking place in India, this is perhaps the most insightful. It does not just map mindset changes; it does so with the certainty of a person who has lived the changes as much as he has witnessed them. Every marketeer should keep this book on his office desk as a ready reckoner. Ranjan Kapur Country Manager – India WPP India in many ways is a “Nation of Nations.” So much heterogeneity and hence complexity in understanding consumers and consumerism. Dheeraj has done a commendable job in peeling off the layers from the onion—creating frameworks and providing very relatable examples to understand the culture. For instance, Dheeraj has used Bollywood as an effective mirror to portray societal changes. Consumer India is a must-read for those who want to understand the cultural evolution of India with its nuances. Rajesh Jejurikar Chief Executive – Automotive Division Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. A labor of love. For years, I have marveled at how Dheeraj’s inquisitive brain continuously churns away to make meaning of everything he observes. His writing simultaneously reflects him as a ” sutradaar ” telling the captivating story of a changing India, even as it does so with the unbiased and expert credentials of the ” computerji ” he describes here. Dheeraj insightfully marries the rapid changes he chronicles with the assimilative fabric of India; where “and” trumps “or.” Against the cliché “change is the only constant,” he underlines that in India, change works with the constant. Enjoy the ride on Dheeraj’s time machine! Prasad Narasimhan Managing Partner, Asia Brandgym |
