How convenient is it to stay in the Garden District to visit the French Quarter?

Planning a trip there in a month for our honeymoon. Looking at some B&B type places located in the Garden Dist, but my lady is wondering about the distance between the hotel and places in the quarter. Specifically she’s concerned as we’re flying in & weren’t planning on getting a rental car, as from what I’ve read parking is scarce & expensive there, we’ll be walking. So would it be convenient and most importantly is it a safe walk particularly at night?

If you don’t want to rent a car you can as the parking is expensive you can take a short cab that is available at the airport any time you land. The distance is about two miles so walking won’t be the best of ideas.
