what are the best techniques and products to paint over a metal surface?

I have a coffee table with a metal frame (glass top, woven shelf under it). It is currently a pewter colored metallic and is chipping. I thought I would try to change the look and would like to paint over it with a dry brush and cream color paint and let the metallic show through a bit. Any suggestions?

Clean surface thoroughly and sand lightly any areas that are flaking or peeling, Look for paint that says can be painted on metal. I would also suggest a clear coat to finish it off with but in a no sheen.
