Repair Tips For A Vinyl Shower Curtain

The problems that vinyl shower curtains present is that they generally get ripped or tear right at the top. This is usually at the seams that hold the shower curtain proper to the thicker strip for the rings. You may think that all is lost but these two can be repaired using a few simple methods.

If you can find a vinyl tape that is of the same color or clear vinyl tape you can effectively repair your shower curtain. Clean the surface and dry thoroughly. Once dry cover the damaged area with the vinyl tape. This should hold for quite some time.

Another alternative is to purchase a vinyl shower curtain repair kit. Any vinyl patch kit can be used for this purpose. They make these for pool liners, and air mattresses. Start with a cleaned and dried surface. Peel stick and your done. These come with adhesive already on the backs of the patches so there is little or no mess at all.

If you are so inclined you can also use PVC cement or hot glue sticks. The glue gun is a homemaker’s friend. It is especially nice to have around when it comes to repairing a shower curtain. Using a piece of matching or near matching vinyl material a little larger than the rip or tear adds a bit of hot glue or cement and let dry. The curtain can now be used again.

Repairing a shower curtain is one thing but you also must do regular maintenance. Shower curtains can get a grimy film of soap and dirt. If you live in an area that has hard water this will add to the caked on mess over time.

Remove the curtain and run enough water in the tub to covert the shower curtain entirely. Use I cup of an oxygenated cleanser and a small amount of dish soap that contains a degreaser. With a green scrubby or a sponge with a scrubber attached gently clean the soiled shower curtain rinse and hang. With an absorbent cloth wipe the curtain down to remove excess water and avoid mold growth.

For shower curtains made of fabric throw them in the wash along with some other items and use of bleach is not recommended but this too will clean the fabric shower curtains. If you have hard water deposits a cup of vinegar in the wash will help to decalcify these deposits.

One last tip, you can also take a soft sponge dipped into a hydrogen peroxide solution and wipe the shower curtain down between major cleanings. Shower curtains are decorative and useful but if left without maintenance they can become a breeding ground.

The bathroom is as much a statement of your artistic endeavors to beautify your home as any other room and the shower curtain is an integral part of the décor. Keep the beautiful centerpiece of your bathroom theme clean, repaired and germ free.
