My Laars Lite pool heater is installed with the stack resting directly on the heat exchanger. Is this correct?

Other diagrams I have seen or show a "manifold" that combustion is based on, holding several inches above the heat exchanger of include a chip in the fire I suppose you could keep the bottom of the fireplace opening several inches above the heat exchanger? This is a Laars lite model 175. I just had to replace the heat exchanger and wonder if this may be part of the reason that began leaking after only 6 years.

Do not know about this model, but this type of arrangement is made for the residual heat from the flue gas to increase efficiency.
