Choosing Hardwood Flooring

Despite an ever-increasing range of alternatives, the allure of feeling the luxury and organic beauty of hardwood flooring (also referred to as solid wood flooring) under your feet, appears not to have diminished at all. Hardwood flooring has been an ever popular flooring solution for hundreds of years; yet in spite of its longevity, the material is not suffering any lack of innovation, with new, greener and more sustainable options to choose from – such as bamboo flooring – the market is still very much alive.

There are a number of useful considerations to make when choosing hardwood flooring as your preferred option. Probably the most important is its suitably for the room you wish to fit it in. Some types of hardwood flooring are unsuitable for certain applications; one of which being for use with underfloor heating systems. This is because natural hardwoods have a tendency to react significantly to changes in temperature, which eventually result in a lot of movement occurring between the flooring. If you’re looking for a real wood finish to combine with an underfloor heating system, you’re better off considering an engineered wood solution. Despite this exception, solid wood flooring is useful in many different types of applications, and is still considered a terrific option.

Contrary to popular opinion, hardwood flooring is an excellent value-for-money option, and in many cases is less expensive than its market rival engineered wood. For one thing, because hardwood flooring comprises of solid wood, the quality of the product is quite simply as good as nature itself has made it. Therefore, when purchasing a high-quality variety of wood such as oak or walnut from a wood flooring specialist, you can be sure that the material is quite simply – organically excellent. There is no need to worry that the glue between the ply’s is not going to last, or that the veneer might come off during heavy use. Hardwood flooring is a quality solution.

Maintaining your hardwood flooring is a straightforward and rewarding task. Remember not to clean your floor with anything abrasive, and to fix soft pads to the bottom of your furniture to prevent scratching and denting from occurring. Good quality laminate and wood cleaners are available from all respectable tile and wood flooring specialists, which help to form a self-polishing film, highly resistant to wear and dirt that will leave your floor both clean and protected. Another fantastic advantage of hardwood flooring is that you don’t have to worry about the degree to which you sand down the surface in the event of damage occurring, or simply when wishing to freshen it up. Other types of flooring such as engineered wood have a limited depth on the top veneer, but since hardwood is solid, there is no need to be concerned over it.

Available in so many different shapes, colours and sizes, hardwood flooring is a very aesthetically versatile option, even though it’s an organic material. Popular types of hardwood include hevea, oak and walnut, and are available in an enormous range of finishes such as solid, lacquered, stained honey, handscraped, distressed, oiled, brushed and coated – to name but a few. When choosing a finish, be sure to research the differences in property between you options, as these can have implications for the amount of maintenance that may be involved, and also the way in which the flooring will likely develop in character with time and use. Some finishes may have a longer shelf-life before you have to reapply them – wax, and some oils are examples of this. Others, such as UV coatings will likely last much longer and will provide more protection to the wood, but make provide the aesthetic quality you desire.
