What is the best way to repair torn leather or fake leather?

I have chocolate brown ottoman that has a small tear in the top of it. I am not sure if it is real or fake leather but I wanted to know what the best way to repair the tear is. Since the tear is on the top of the ottoman it is important that it is patched in a way that people can sit on the ottoman and put their feet on it without causing it further damage. The tear is about 1 inch, it is a clean cut, looks like it was damaged when it was opened by a box cutter or something. I would like to do the repair myself if possible.

first, determine if you have leather, or vinyl, or micro-fibre (looks like leather, but is actually fabric) the reason for determining what product you have, determines which type of glue/adhesive you will need to make the repair. If leather, take a small piece of “canvas” type fabric cut to size a tad larger than the slice you described. gently insert it through the hole, aligning it under the leather, atop the padding. Next, using “contact” cement, hold the opening open, take a small artist brush, and apply glue to both the “patch” and the underside of the cut area of your upholstery covering. hold the pieces apart until the glue flashes off (appears to be dry), and then gently align the “cut edges” to meet together, and press the top covering down onto the “patch” this will hold well, and a final application of a liquid “super glue” lightly applied to the line of the cut, and quickly wiping away the excess glue with a rag, will seal the actual cut and strengthen the repair. If you have vinyl as your upholstery covering, the same process is used. If you have an actual cloth fabric, pull the cut line together, tucking both edges of the cut, under and hold with sewing pins, and then hand sew the area together, using a “blind stitch” type of sewing stitch. You will still have a slight “pucker” along the area, but your hole is now closed, and will prevent further tearing if you can make these type repairs. Each method I’ve described is really easy to perform, and yes, you can do it yourself.
