Disability affects 650 million people worldwide, a number amounting to 10 percent of the world’s population. While the life of disabled people can be challenging, there are several ways to make daily living easier—with the use of modern mobility equipment you can get around easier and do more.
When we say “disability,” this not only concerns individuals who cannot walk or see, but it encompasses a great number of people with paraplegia, quadriplegia, stroke, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, brain injuries, cerebral palsy, and other conditions that hinder movement and social interaction.
These are individuals who can still continue their normal lives with the use of equipment that aids mobility; they can still enjoy refreshing baths in the shower or enjoy a swimming pool, or can still stroll in the park and enjoy a beautiful day.
Bathing is an area of particular concern for people with disabilities and their families. Caretakers do not have to worry because there are shower bath chairs that aid in keeping showers safe. These handicap chairs resemble regular chairs, but they are ergonomically built so that users are comfortable and well-supported while in the shower. The seat area can be flat or curved, but both versions have drainage holes to prevent water collection that may result to slipping. Available in foldable and regular models, these chairs have adjustable height, fixed armrests, plastic coated steel frames and slip-resistant rubber tips. Models are easy to clean and store, available in different colors and finishes, accommodate various user weights, and comply with standard state requirements.
For those looking to enjoy swimming pools, there are portable handicap pool lifts. The portable handicap pool lifts are created to let disabled people immerse in the pool and receive its therapeutic benefits (as well as just plain old enjoyment).
This piece of equipment is basically composed of a sling that carries the person via the support of an anchor connected to a set of chains. The sling and anchor connect to a sturdy pole, which is securely attached to an in-ground or above-ground base stand. Additional features are also available, including stability vests, arm rests, seat pads, custom covers, battery and charger and spine board attachment. Models allow 360-degree swivel for easier operation in any part of the pool, can accommodate up to 400 lbs. of weight, and comply with ADA requirements.
