Modern Sunrise
How do I work out what ‘mode’ an improvised passage is in????
I’ve got an assignment for college. I have to transcribe a short piece of improvised music and then analyse it.
I’ve chosen a piece called ‘Softly as In a Morning Sunrise’ performed live by Modern Jazz Quartet. I’ve notated a bit of the walking bassline (played by Percy Heath) and have figured out the accompanying chord changes.
How as part of my analysis I figured it’s quite important to consider the modes (particularly because it’s jazz!). However I don’t really know where to start on deciphering them!!
Any help appreciated.
As opposed to trying to find the modes right off that bat, try and find the key centers of the piece, recognize the tonic note of each key change to find the harmonic motion and bass line. After that finding the mode of each key center in chord should be a snap.
