Buddhism in the Modern World Part 2

Dharmapala returned to Ceylon in May 2434/1891 and founded the Maha Bodhi Society in Colombo. In the same year, was sent A mission to Bodh Gaya and then an international conference of Buddhists was held there. The following year he launched a blog and headquarters of the new company was formed in Calcutta. Dharmapala visited the United States twice during the 1890's, the first time to attend the Parliament of Religions in Chicago, during visit to Hawaii, Japan, China, Thailand and Malaysia on their way back, and the second time to preach Buddhism, when he stayed there for a year and made several American converts. substantial financial support came from wealthy Americans, especially Mrs. Mary E. Foster, whom he met in Honolulu and became his advocate more active. Other branches of the Society were created in 2463/1920 and a Buddhist Vihara was opened at Culcutta. The revival movement was so well established and followed a steadily. Dharmapala entered the monastic life in 2474/1931 and died two years later, leaving without finishing his mission to be carried out by his colleagues and followers.

India achieved independence on August 15, 2490 / 1947. When questions were raised about what should be adopted as national symbols of free India Constituent Assembly ultimately turned to the Buddhist heritage. Therefore, the Dharma-chakra or Wheel of Law came to be represented in the center national flag to remind the nation of the noble doctrine of the Buddha and the Dharma Vijaya or Conquest of Justice Asoka, while Lion Capital of Asoka, which represents the bold proclamation of the Dharma to the four quarters of the world, has been adopted as the official seal of the Republic. The Chairman of the Committee that drafted the Constitution was Dr. BR Ambedkar, the leader of the untouchables who converted to Buddhism and Buddhist revival made a mass movement.

Two other important events increased interest in Buddhism among the Indian masses, the home-coming of the sacred relics of the two chief disciples of Buddha and the Buddha Jayanti 2492/1949, or the 2500th anniversary of Parinirvana of Buda, in 1956. The relics were returned to India by the British government to be enshrined in the San-chi, original resting place, at the request of the Company Maha Bodhi. The consecration of the relics was held in conjunction with the Maha Bodhi Society Golden Jubilee and attended an international conference on Buddhism by the prime ministers India and Burma, and the leaders of the Buddhist world. The Buddha Jayanti Indian celebrations began in May 1956 and lasted for a full year, until May 1957. The program of the Government of India includes the publication of an alias in Devanagari script ฺ TripIt and '2500 years of Buddhism, "a special volume is a indication of the relationship given by Buddhism the educated class of India.

The October 14 celebration year, Dr. BR Ambedkar led half a million followers in a formal statement of commitment to Buddhism. This event was followed by a rapid increase in the Buddhist population in India, particularly through a number of similar conversions among the untouchables who seek social equality. In 2508/1965 there were about 4 million Buddhists in India, compared with 50,000 in 2434/1891.

The number of monks, viharas and Buddhist societies and organizations have also increased significantly. The study of Pali was introduced at the University of Calcutta in the year 2451/1908. This example has been followed by many other universities in India. The establishment of the Nalanda Pali Institute (Nava Nalanda Mahavihara) in 2494/1951 and the founding of the Magadh University in 2505/1962 is also evidence of an important modern India has given the Pali and Buddhist studies.

In the early 1950, when the Red Chinese invaded Tibet, its people, monks and lay people, fled to northern India and took refuge in the mountainous region. There, a Buddhist community is taking shape and Tibetan Buddhism can make a significant contribution to the future of Indian Buddhism.

A monastery called Wat Thai Thai Buddha Gaya, which was built by the Government of Thailand at the invitation of the Government of India to celebrate the Buddha Jayanti, was completed in 2509 / 1966. It is well known as a viharas the best ever built in modern India. The Burmese, Japanese, Chinese and Tibetan Buddhist monasteries also have Buddha Gaya.

Just a century ago, Buddhism was unheard of in the land of his birth, as almost every vestige of religion had been deleted from the Indian soil. Today, the seed tree Bodhi, deeply planted in the soil, which is fed by fertilizer abroad, have sprouted and have signs of a glorious growth.

In some border areas India, as some parts of Assam and Bangladesh (East Bengal), Buddhism never entirely disappeared. There, the monastic life and still survive a small Buddhist population has persisted. Notable in this way is of Chittagong, which has been closely linked with Burma both historically and geographically, there monasticism consists of hundreds of monks and novices.1 through a renewal movement, Buddhism in these areas has begun to grow again and can do a good service for the development modern Buddhism in the Indian subcontinent.

Situated north of the Himalayas, Tibet is famous for its unique culture and its controversial assimilation into modern China. Yet Tibet in the twenty-first century can only be properly understood in the context of its extraordinary history. Sam van Schaik brings the history of Tibet to life by telling the stories of the people involved, from the glory days of the Tibetan empire in the seventh century through to the present day. He explores the emergence of Tibetan Buddhism and the rise of the Dalai Lamas, Tibet’s entanglement in the "Great Game" in the early twentieth century, its submission to Chinese Communist rule in the 1950s, and the troubled times of recent decades. "Tibet" sheds light on the country’s complex relationship with China and explains often-misunderstood aspects of its culture, such as reborn lamas, monasteries and hermits, "The Tibetan Book of the Dead," and the role of the Dalai Lama. Van Schaik works through the layers of history and myth to create a compelling narrative, one that offers readers a greater understanding of this important and controversial corner of the world.

A History of Modern Tibet, volume 2

It is not possible to fully understand contemporary politics between China and the Dalai Lama without understanding what happenedand whyduring the 1950s. In a book that continues the story of Tibet’s history that he began in his acclaimed A History of Modern Tibet, 1913-1951: The Demise of the Lamaist State, Melvyn C. Goldstein critically revises our understanding of that key period in midcentury. This authoritative account utilizes new archival material, including never before seen documents, and extensive interviews with Tibetans, including the Dalai Lama, and with Chinese officials. Goldstein furnishes fascinating and sometimes surprising portraits of these major players as he deftly unravels the fateful intertwining of Tibetan and Chinese politics against the backdrop of the Korean War, the tenuous Sino-Soviet alliance, and American cold war policy.

The Struggle for Modern Tibet: The Autobiography of Tashi Tsering

$30.94

This autobiography of a Tibetan nationalist with a burning desire to reform and modernize the "old society" presents for the first time a personal portrait of Tibet that is realistic — neither a feudal hell, as Beijing would have it, nor Shangrila, as many sympathetic outsiders would have it.

The Dragon in the Land of Snows: A History of Modern Tibet Since 1947

The Dragon in the Land of Snows: A History of Modern Tibet Since 1947

$3.95

Based entirely on unpublished primary sources, Tsering Shakya’s groundbreaking history of modern Tibet shatters the popular conception of the country as an isolated Shangri-la unaffected by broader international developments. Shakya gives a balanced, blow-by-blow account of Tibet’s ongoing struggle to maintain its independence and safeguard its cultural identity while being sandwiched between the heavyweights of Asian geopolitics: Britain, India, China, and the United States. With thorough documentation, Shakya details the Chinese depredations of Tibet, and reveals the failures of the Tibetan leadership’s divided strategies. Rising above the simplistic dualism so often found in accounts of Tibet’s contested recent history, The Dragon in the Land of Snows lucidly depicts the tragedy that has befallen Tibet and identifies the conflicting forces that continue to shape the aspirations of the Tibetan people today.

Red Poppies: A Novel of Tibet

Red Poppies: A Novel of Tibet

$3.95

A lively and cinematic twentieth-century epic, Red Poppies focuses on the extravagant and brutal reign of a clan of Tibetan warlords during the rise of Chinese Communism. The story is wryly narrated by the chieftain’s son, a self-professed "idiot" who reveals the bloody feuds, seductions, secrets, and scheming behind his family’s struggles for power. When the chieftain agrees to grow opium poppies with seeds supplied by the Chinese Nationalists in exchange for modern weapons, he draws Tibet into the opium trade — and unwittingly plants the seeds for a downfall. A "swashbuckling novel" (New York Times Book Review), Red Poppies is at once a political parable and a moving elegy to the lost kingdom of Tibet in all its cruelty, beauty, and romance.

The Story of Tibet: Conversations with the Dalai Lama

The Story of Tibet: Conversations with the Dalai Lama

$17.45

On its hardcover publication in 2006, The Story of Tibet was met with wide acclaim. A monumental work, it is rare and crucial addition to out understanding of a country with one of the world’s richest backgrounds. Over the course of three years, journalist Thomas Laird spent more than sixty hours with His Holiness the Dalai Lama in candid, one-on-one interviews that covered His Holiness’s beliefs on history, science, reincarnation, and Buddhism. Laird brings these meetings to life in a rich and vibrant historical narrative that outlines the essence of thousands of years of civilization, myth, and spirituality. Tibet’s story is rich with tradition and filled with promise. It begins with the Bodhisattva Chenrizi ("The Holy One") whose spirit many Tibetans believe resides within the Dalai Lama. We learn the origins of Buddhism, and about the era of Great Tibetan Emperors, whose reign stretched from southwestern China to Northern India. His Holiness introduces us to Tibet’s greatest yogis and meditation masters, and explains how the institution of the Dalai Lama was founded. Laird explores, with His Holiness, Tibet’s relations with the Mongols, the Golden Age under the Great Fifth Dalai Lama, Tibet’s years under Manchu overlords, modern independence in the early twentieth century, and the Dalai Lama’s personal meetings with Mao just before His Holiness fled into exile in 1959.

At different times in its history Tibet has been renowned for pacifism and martial prowess, enlightenment and cruelty. The Dalai Lama may be the only religious leader who can inspire the devotion of agnostics. Patrick French has been fascinated by Tibet since he was a teenager. He has read its history, agitated for its freedom, and risked arrest to travel through its remote interior. His love and knowledge inform every page of this learned, literate, and impassioned book. Talking with nomads and Buddhist nuns, exiles and collaborators, French portrays a nation demoralized by a half-century of Chinese occupation and forced to depend on the patronage of Western dilettantes. He demolishes many of the myths accruing to Tibet–including those centering around the radiant figure of the Dalai Lama. Combining the best of history, travel writing, and memoir, Tibet, Tibet is a work of extraordinary power and insight. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Temptations of the West: How to Be Modern in India, Pakistan, Tibet, and Beyond

Temptations of the West: How to Be Modern in India, Pakistan, Tibet, and Beyond

$3.95

A vivid, often surprising account of South Asia today by the author of "An End to Suffering" In his new book, Pankaj Mishra brings literary authority and political insight to bear on travels that are at once epic and personal. Traveling in the changing cultures of South Asia, Mishra sees the pressures–the temptations–of Western-style modernity and prosperity, and teases out the paradoxes of globalization. A visit to Allahabad, birthplace of Jawaharlal Nehru, occasions a brief history of the tumultuous post-independence politics Nehru set in motion. In Kashmir, just after the brutal killing of thirtyfive Sikhs, Mishra sees Muslim guerrillas playing with Sikh village children while the media ponder a (largely irrelevant) visit by President Clinton. And in Tibet Mishra exquisitely parses the situation whereby the Chinese government–officially atheist and strongly opposed to a free Tibet–has discovered that Tibetan Buddhism can "be packaged and sold to tourists." """Temptations of the West "is a book concerned with history still in the making–essential reading about a conflicted and rapidly changing region.
