Looks of Modern Kitchen Cabinets
Not all modern kitchen cabinets are alike, but there are some general trends that form the basis of the modern design. If you are interested in the modern look, go to a cabinet company and check out their offerings. You will find certain features in upper shelves, cabinet front designs, finishes, colors and hardware styles.
Upper Shelves
Modern kitchen cabinets often have different types of upper shelves from traditional cabinets. Some have open cabinets or glass-fronted cabinets. Some kitchens with modern designs do not use cabinets in the upper areas, but opt for open shelving instead. The entire look for the modern style is clean and open.
Cabinet Front Designs
Cabinet fronts of modern kitchen cabinets are usually slick and sleek. They are usually smooth and unadorned by wood shaping or moldings. If a grain shows on the wood, it is usually a fairly straight horizontal grain. However, wood is not an important feature of the modern design.
Finishes
Paint finishes of modern kitchen cabinets are often lacquered to a high gloss. This goes along with the slick, sleek design. You will never see distressed or aged finishes on modern cabinets, and even regular oiled surfaces are rare. Instead, modern cabinets are more likely to have a finish that adds light and shine, along with a clean appearance.
Colors
The colors of modern kitchen cabinets are usually quite striking. Blacks and whites are very common among modern cabinets. Sometimes bright reds or other primary colors are used. The look, again, is one of sleek, simple, clean and bold colors. Modern cabinets are all about a break with the traditional ornate, varnished wood surfaces, and a leaning towards more vivid colors and images.
Hardware styles
If you looked at most modern kitchens, you would think that the style did not include hardware. There are usually no drawer pulls or door knobs at all, or if there are they are unobtrusive. The hardware that keeps the doors and drawers in place is necessary, of course, but it is usually hidden to the point that it might as well not be there as far as the look is concerned. The appearance of modern kitchen cabinets keeps its clean lines by reducing the visible hardware.
