High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Pottery is the ceramic ware made by potters. Major types of pottery include earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain. The places where such wares are made are called potteries. Pottery is one of the oldest human technologies and artforms, and remains a major industry today. Ceramic art covers the art of pottery, whether in items made for use or purely for decoration. Pottery is made by forming a clay body into objects of a required shape and heating them to high temperatures in a kiln to induce reactions that lead to permanent changes, including increasing their strength and hardening and setting their shape. Early Pottery

Early Pottery

A synthesis of research on earthenware technologies of the Late Archaic Period in the southeastern U.S. Information on social groups and boundaries, and on interaction between groups, burgeons when pottery appears on the social landscape of the Southeast in the Late Archaic period (ca. 5000-3000 years ago). This volume provides a broad, comparative review of current data from "first potteries" of the Atlantic and Gulf coastal plains and in the lower Mississippi River Valley, and it presents research that expands our understanding of how pottery functioned in its earliest manifestations in this region. Included are discussions of Orange pottery in peninsular Florida, Stallings pottery in Georgia, Elliot’s Point fiber-tempered pottery in the Florida panhandle, and the various pottery types found in excavations over the years at the Poverty Point site in northeastern Louisiana. The data and discussions demonstrate that there was much more interaction, and at an earlier date, than is often credited to Late Archaic societies. Indeed, extensive trade in pottery throughout the region occurs as early as 1500 B.C. These and other findings make this book indispensable to those involved in research into the origin and development of pottery in general and its unique history in the Southeast in particular.

Studio Pottery

Studio Pottery

$58.94

Studio pottery is made by modern artists working alone or in small groups, producing unique items or pottery in small quantities, typically with all stages of manufacture carried out by one individual. Much studio pottery is table ware or cook ware but an increasing number of studio potters produce nonfunctional or sculptural items. Since the 1980s there has been a distinct trend away from functional pottery (e.g. Grayson Perry) and some studio potters now prefer to call themselves ceramic artists, ceramists or simply artists. Studio pottery is represented by potters all over the world but has strong roots in Britain. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. Islamic Pottery

Islamic Pottery

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The era of Islamic pottery started around 622. From 633, Muslim armies moved rapidly towards Persia, Byzantium, Mesopotamia, Anatolia, Egypt and later Andalusia. The early history of Islamic pottery remains somewhat obscure and speculative as little evidence has survived. Apart from tiles which escaped destruction due to their use in architectural decoration of buildings and mosques, much early medieval pottery vanished. Pottery and Porcelain

$34.02

This work traces the history of pottery and porcelain from early times down to the Philadelphia Exhibition of 1876. What the author attempts to do in this book is to gather and present, in a way to be easily understood, the most important facts relating to pottery and porcelain. The study of this interesting subject has for more than a century been constant in Europe. A correct knowledge of it may now almost be called a liberal education. In the United States something has been done; and the public mind is now asking, What is it that makes pottery and porcelain so attractive to scholars, statesmen, women, and wits? In some degree, this work answers this question. Illustrated.
