Racing Padded Bar

People with race horse experience, need help with a horse.?

Ok, we have this 3yo gelding who hangs really bad on the one rein. It is something he has done since he came in as a yearling. His teeth and mouth are fine, he isn’t sore anywhere, and gelding him hasn’t helped at all.

He races in blinkers, a straight bar lugging bit and last start he wore a tongue tie. We have tried a pricker pad but it doesn’t work.

He is a very talented runner, blitzes his trials but when he gets put under pressure in a race, he starts hanging. You can see it miles away, it looks terrible.

Can anyone give me some suggestions to what we can do with this horse? It is so frustrating. He came back from a 1400m race and wasn’t even blowing!

The trouble with a lot of racing yards is they break a yearling/ 2 yr old, get it going in a straight line then work it up the gallops before he has even learnt how to balance himself.

If at all possible I would see if he could have a couple of sessions a week schooling, doing some slow work in an arena where this problem can be sorted out without worrying about working or the horse your upsides.

Many trainers are reaping the benefits of adopting a non racing approach to working their horses, and this need not effect his time working.

Also his back may be ok..but I bet if you look at his muscle definition from behind he would be incredibly one sided, this can be remedied with flat work.

If he was my horse (as an owner with a horse in training for example) I would pay to have a dressage trainer either ride or give him and his lad/lass a lesson.

It is no good scrimping on the small extra cost a week if his leaning is affecting his performance on the track.

btw..prickers do not work..the horses natural instinct is to lean IN TO pain not away from it, so it actually makes the problem worse.
