Towel Radiator Lockshield and Check valves?

Now the summer is coming I have no need for the central heating to be on. However I want to keep my towel rail in the bathroom on for a few hours each morning to dry, well, towels!

Previous houses I have lived in only had one valve on the rads. This house has two on each rad.

Now, from what I assume the check valve is what regulates the incoming flow and the lockshield the outgoing flow. All other rads in the house have at least one valve fully closed and are not heating up.

Now, I’m guessing on the towel rail I want the check valve fully open… Now is it better for the hot water to sit in the rad (lockshield 75% closed) or for water to go back to the boiler (25% open) and get heated again??

With all due respect, you _do not_ want to run your central boiler to operate one single radiator in your house. Assuming you have a two-pipe system or a modified single-pipe system, you will still have to heat very nearly the entire mass of the water and the supply and return pipes for the convenience of that single radiator. And also both the check-valve and the main radiator valve are typically (but not always) designed to pass (very small amounts) some water to prevent freezing. Even if you have a very modern system with a small volume of water in it, you still have a lot of mass to heat. If you have an older system with large-diameter riser and return pipes that volume will be considerable.

On the thermal mass question – if you want the radiator to maintain heat, you want the water to circulate wide-open. If you want a single shot of hot water, you want it to be restricted.

And you will need to fool the thermostat so that it calls for heat when none is needed.

It will be very much cheaper to install a small electric heater to blow right on the towels.
