What is the importance of red and blue lights on police vehicles, and the red fire / EMT?

I have curious to know Why those colors (red / blue) are the colors used for ALL emergency vehicles. I'm thinking that red is the primary color used, and blue is used to distinguish between the police and fire, but why? I know that some also used yellow, yellow is associated with risks. Red means danger, but why Why blue / red and blue combination?

In the back of U.S. in the 1950's and before police and firefighters had their red lights vehicles. In fact, it is still the law in California that a police car should show at least a constant, not flashing red light. The blue lights were reserved for people volunteer firefighters to use in their personal vehicles .. You may notice that many fire trucks also have some green lights on them. No flash but are there because green and blue can be seen best under smoky and foggy. The police all had flashlights blue or green in front of their stations likely to be better in the dark. When green was adopted as the "go" the police started using blue light signal even more. Blue became the symbol of the city police as the "boys in blue" or the "thin blue line." In the 1960 observed a number of criminologists to let the people who had a lot of police around was actually better than having a bunch of cops on the street. In an effort to make more visible police ended a large amount of foot rhythms and officers because when n cars easier to see. many of them also changed so that the siren would sound special.
