bright red blood in my puppys stools?

my 21 week old mastiff is very well house trained but for the last 2 nights Between 3am-6.30am he has got up, gone downstairs and left a very large amount of diarrhoea on our rug, then last night hes done the same but once on the rug which was very runny and had alot of clear drops of bright red blood in and around the stool, then a larger amount near the sofa which he had then stood in and spread allover the house. this is not like him at all, yet he isn’t showing any other signs of illness. like i said he is very well house trained and if he does want to go use the garden he will whine and wake us up. im a light sleeper by the way so he definitely did not whimper. any ideas of what could be wrong would help. thank you

If it is snowing where you live, he could have eaten this and this could cause diarrhoe. One of my old dogs, started to go downstairs during the night and twice there were heaps in the hall. If your dog sleeps in your bedroom, close the bedroom door and he will tell you when he needs to go out. If a dog goes downstairs and realises that they cannot get out, they hold on as long as possible and end up being incapable of doing this.

Vets usually advise to withhold food for twenty four hours when a dog has diarrhoea and then put it on a light diet for the next few days. Try to get your dog to drink a lot of water.However because of the blood in the stool, phone your vet.
The following is what vets consider to be a light diet.
Boil fish or chicken, remove the skin and bones, mince or chop this and mix with soggy rice. (soggy rice is overcooked rice using extra water) Or scramble eggs in water, never use milk or butter. Even a healthy dog has problems digesting cow’s milk. Vets always suggest that a dog’s digestive system is rested before visiting them, however if after fasting, your dog is still vomiting or has diarrhoea you should visit the vet.

When a dog has diarrhoea, other health issues or after surgery a light diet is important. The dog should be given five very small meals a day for several days consisting of the above. When it is ready for its normal food, just small amount of this should be given and it should have several small meals a day.
