Putting in a shower – where do I start!?

I need to have a shower fitted above my bath – cheaply and quite quickly. I’ve not had great experiences with using mixer taps (steaming hot/freezing cold) but baring in mind I need this done with the minimum of fuss and expense what do people suggest? Would I be better off with an electric one? What sort of price should I be aiming at? Do I buy a shower first, then find a plumber or the other way round? Help!

buy a shower then get a plumber in , they normally charge by the hour so have a look around for the cheapest, give them a ring then ask how much it will be to put the shower in (sometimes hidden charges)
