Whilst the sea can get a little rough and there are rocks quite close to the shore, between October and March the setting is most ideal for a visit. Many water sport activities are on offer and the visitor can choose an activity according to how adventurous one is prepared to be. Parasailing, scuba diving, surfing and windsurfing are some of the activities on offer.
Apart from the main beach, there are a number of smaller and more secluded beaches which have volcanic black sand. These beaches afford more privacy. Mineral water flowing from the hills in Varkala is believed to have healing properties and many flock to have a dip or drink from these waters. The sea water itself of this area is believed by many Hindu devotees to be able to cleanse one of their sins.
