Side Mount Shower

My toilet’s flange is installed 90 degrees off, must I replace it when replacing the wax ring?

The flange is a Sioux Chief single piece ABS plastic. The slots where the closet bolts should go are facing front and back, rather than on the sides. there are little grooves on the sides, and that is where the original toilet was mis-mounted. There also were only 4 screws into the sub-floor, 3 on one side, and 1 on the other side. I tested for level, and the flange is off both front to back and left to right. This is an 8 year old home. It seems that the closet bolts belong in the channel shown at the front and back, but this means the toilet would be inaccessible (facing the shower). Help! Thanks!
I am going to answer myself. It’s quick and cheap enough to buy a new flange and install it properly. and less likely that the wax seal will fail as quickly as it might if you use the existing flange.

You’re right, the bolts go in the slotted openings. This allows the flange to be slightly off-angle (but not fully 90 degrees) without causing the toilet to be crooked.

The right way to fix it is to replace the flange, but I’ll bet most plumbers would just cut slots into the flange from the sides, shove the bolts in and be done with it.
