Size Steel Bed

How thick for a concrete patio base?

This will be done with a rough finish to install a flagstone patio (mortar bed) on top. Total size will be around 14′x24′.

I’m thinking about 4″ . . . but am also curious about reinforcing steel and expansion joint needs.

This will be in New England and thus will be exposed to snow and ice, plus 100º sun in the Summer.
There won’t be any vehicles on it other than maybe backing my small (4×6, one ton gross) utility trailer on it to put stuff in the shed.

I have a base of ‘crush and run’ and course gravel already . . . I had a slab poured/finished for a shed and the site work for the patio was done at the same time (was originally going to be brick pavers, but I scored free flagstone).

I’m not worried about the finish on this slab, since it will be completely covered.

Make sure you have a good base that does not absorb water.
Crushed stone dime size. Compact it good.
Patio area should drain good
Pour slab 4″ thick with fiber in it – order 4,000 test mix with air entraingment. This air makes bubbles in the concrete which helps it survive expansion/contraction.
The edges of slab need to be turned down which means dig down around the edges with a flat shovel approx 24″. This will reinforce the edge and keep water from getting under slab. In the early winter when we get rain then it turns cold, that water in the ground expands as it freezes, at the edge of a slab this can heave up and crack slab. This turned down edge keeps water from gettin under slab as the water has to go down 24″ before it can start seeping inward, by then it is too far down to permeate back up and under slab.
This takes more concrete – but is well worth it.
