When Your Shower Soap Dispenser Needs a Tough Cleaning
It can seem kind of odd to think about cleaning a gadget whose sole purpose is to dispense soap, a cleaning agent. But if your shower soap dispenser is no longer pumping out soap, a tough cleaning might be exactly what it needs! Often, in this case, your bathroom soap dispenser is perfectly fine, nothing has broken, but the nozzle has simply become clogged. The pump and nozzle work together to get the soap from the inside container to the palm of your dirty hand. These same parts can get backed-up with hardened, dried soap and dirt. The good news is, it’s very simple to fix and your shower soap dispenser should be back to full working capacity in no time at all.
Before you begin, here are the tools you will need to do the job well:
- A couple of cups of hot water
- Small pipe cleaner
- Distilled vinegar
Step 1: Un-mount the bathroom soap dispenser from the wall and double check that all other parts of the apparatus appear to be in normal working order (example: no soap leaking out, plenty of soap available for the pump to draw from, all tubing is attached to the correct locations, no visible foreign objects, etc).
Step 2: The most common issue is that there is a clog somewhere in the tubing. Try to identify where that blockage is.
Step 3: Take the part of the shower soap dispenser that is blocked and run hot water through it for a few minutes. This should slowly wash away the blockage. Keep running the water through it until the water comes out clean.
Step 4: If step 3 does not remove the buildup, work the small pipe cleaner through the tubing with the hot water, spinning it around and drawing it back and forth for maximum cleaning power. Then rise until completely clean.
Step 5: For the ultra difficult clogs, add distilled vinegar to your cleaning regimen. Vinegar is a great cleaning product, especially for bathroom soap dispensers because it dissolves the oils from soap. If steps 1 through 4 fail to remove the problem and allow soap to flow freely like it should, then use a combination of warm water, pipe cleaner, and distilled vinegar to work out the blockage.
Step 6: Once all the parts are completely cleaned, reattach the inside working parts and use the soap dispenser’s pump to run warm, clean water through the whole apparatus. This step is especially important if you have used vinegar to help you clean.
Step 7: Refill the container with new soap, and re-mount to the wall. It is now fresh, clean, and ready to wash away more dirt and grit!
Should all these steps and cleaning processes fail to remove the blockage in your bathroom soap dispenser, head to your local major hardware store. Most of the working parts in this household gadget can be found and purchases there for a fraction of what it would cost to order a whole new dispenser.
