Heating up a cold local church with the simple addition of a new boiler
Thanks to the introduction of the CD50S and CD70S high output system boilers, Alpha Heating Innovation was selected as a supplier for boilers in church refurbishment work.
The existing boiler at St. John the Baptist Church in Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire, was technologically advanced when it was installed some 15 years ago. However – a combination of further developments in boiler design, the demands for fuel efficiency and the knock-on effects on the environment and gas bills, and the difficulty in obtaining spare parts for the maintenance of this boiler prompted the decision to have a new installation.
While Commercial Gas director Michael Murphy is loyal to the Alpha product range, he would have needed to look at other manufacturers if this job had come along earlier due to the limited high output boiler options in the Alpha line-up at that time. As he states: “Until the launch of the CD50S and CD70S boilers, Alpha didn’t have any boilers that would satisfy the demands of this project.”
The boiler that was removed offered an output of 150kW. However, its poor efficiency of about 75% meant it always struggled to provide the necessary output. By selecting two boilers to replace the one, the church now enjoys a total output of 120kW at a far greater efficiency than the old model, and the comfort of knowing that, in the unlikely event of one boiler breaking down, there is always another there supplying some heat. Indeed, at milder times of the year one of the boilers could be switched off, bringing greater savings to the church funds.
This is advice Michael gives to churches and other large sites. Multi-boiler installation is a far better option from his point of view.
The Alpha CD50S and CD70S are wall-mounted SEDBUK Band ‘A’ rated condensing, fan assisted system boilers, providing heating only for sealed central heating systems, or open systems, if required.
Specifically designed for larger output requirements, with central heating loads of between 10kW and 72.8kW, the models weigh-in at 63kg and 68kg.
While supplied with type ‘B23′ flue configuration (open chamber and forced draught) in order to allow for flexible siting, the configuration can be changed to type ‘C’ (room sealed) with the use of a flue adaptor kit, supplied with the concentric flue kit.
These boilers can be supplied for use with natural or propane gas (LPG) and are capable of being installed as a single unit or in simple modular formations for even bigger outputs. In this particular instance, the natural gas option was specified.
Standard features include a high-grade stainless steel heat exchanger, fully modulating low NOx burner, pre-wired 2m mains lead, as well as built-in plume management, commissioning and fault-finding.
Wall-mounted, each of the boilers measures 950mm x 600mm x 525mm, and their weights make them easier to fit compared with competitors’ models. They have 3-year, ‘no quibble’ guarantees that cover all components against fault or breakdown, the CD50S and CD70S give installers and their customers impressive long-term peace-of-mind.
In this project, the two boilers work together to feed to a barrier heat exchanger. Contamination was the primary reason for this, as Michael Murphy explains. “While you would expect to find water in the central heating system, you might also find a variety of contaminants such as bacteria, corrosion and carbon deposits.” Michael states.
“All of these,” he continues, “will attack the metal in the new boilers, so a barrier plate heat exchanger provides the ideal solution. Indeed, it provides the only solution, as I don’t personally believe power flushing is particularly effective.”
This is money well spent in Michael’s opinion. “It makes much more sense to repair or replace a barrier heat exchanger at a couple of hundred pounds, compared to replacing a boiler with a cost into four figures.” He states.
Michael also believes the build quality of the Alpha units will be important for the long-term success of the installation. “You would be surprised at what the local atmospheric conditions can do to a boiler,” he says. “The salt-laden air can really get to work on Cast Iron heat exchangers and the like.”
With the CD50S and CD70S, Michael believes that the stainless steel used in the construction of the heat exchanger will enhance the durability of these boilers in this seaside location.
Michael, and his assistant Iain Gordon, spent several days on this project which was described as being “straightforward and problem free”.
The result is an installation that is an answer to the prayers of those who suffered from the cold in St. John the Baptist Church in Port Glasgow.
