Death Gate

Well here I sit over one month after Mom’s death. And Heather and I are still broke after paying off final bills and expenses. Here we stand at the starting gate to our new life without mom. I feel empty and lost. Everyone around me seems cold, distant, and shallow. Because they are. Just me and my soul mate on a journey to who knows where.

I wish we could find people just like us with the same kind of free spirit and same sense of humor. We are free as a bird and broke as a terd. We were by mother’s side day and night for twelve years. We did everything with her and for her. She was our world. It feels like we just got out of prison (one of our own choosing of course).

We look around. We look at each other with a blank stare and think how in the hell did we end up here. Have any of you ever went through this experience? If you haven’t you might think I am crazy or something.

We did not plan for any of this. Oh sure we talked about what we would do if mom passed but I don’t think either one of us took it seriously. We thought she would live forever.

We are really trying to figure things out but it is so hard to just pick up and go on with your life after caring for your loved one that long. We both lost a part of us when she died. We were there with her when she took her last little gasping breath. It is like a dream. We stayed with her just lying there beside her after she died. We watched them roll her out the front door never to see her again. Except in that little white box sitting on my dresser.

I have a picture of her leaning in front of her box of bones and I talk to her all the time even though I know she probably can’t hear me. Words cannot express how much I miss her. But I am glad that she is not suffering anymore. We are the ones suffering. We are the ones waiting to pass through the gate of death and have someone miss us as much as we miss her I hope.

Being in the dead body business all of my life never could have ever prepared me for seeing my mother get sick, have a long illness, suffer horribly like she did, and die in my arms at home. I hope and pray that those of you who have to go through this have family that will stand by your side and be with you throughout this ordeal. You never get over it. The memory always lingers in your mind. But maybe, just maybe, the experience will help you help someone else.
