What is preferred for you: the purchase of a steam turbine generator 6.4MW gearbox with gear or not?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of having a turbine speed of 7600rpm and a gearbox speed reducer to convert at 3000 rpm for the generator instead of one with 3000 rpm directly coupled generator?

The turbine will be less (in inverse proportion to the speed) and you may be able to use a derivative of aircraft with more size small, helps keep down the costs of both initial investment and maintenance. However, the efficiency is not as high. The gearbox of 6.4 MW is considerable and represents a risk of availability and a cost factor, once again, both for initial purchase and maintenance. As to my preference: For a decision on you'd need to run the numbers in detail, but the trend is "unchanged." I do not so much how are you big gearboxes.
