Table Harvest Farm

Table Harvest Farm
Would you share in my delight of slowing up idiots on rural roads ?

Hi Folks,

I help my good friend out each harvest time by driving tractor and grain trailers from the fields to the farm.

This is a small yet neccessary part of UK grain production, bread on the tables of the land, and barley in your beer etc.

I am as courteous as is possible when using minor country roads, and pull in if I have a couple of cars behind, but then you get the odd idiot, cutting through villages on the “rat-runs”, who throw themselves into a bad temper, hooting and hollering because I can only do about 10mph with 7 ton of grain on the back, and they will be 5mins later for work

I see road rage on major roads and motorways, and just avoid it, but this year I could “run out of deisel” somewhere, and block the lane with the cheap sports car clown stuck behind.

Perhaps it is a bit of the devil in me, but folks should be more tolerant of hard working vehicles and drivers.

Any thoughts ?

Bob

Bob;

I live on the Central Plains (grain belt) of Saskatchewan, Canada and this is an all too common problem here. 90% of our roads are dirt/gravelled and barely wide enough for some of the farm equipment that travels them. These roads are also slightly elevated and ditched on both sides. The most common accidents after hitting deer are rollovers caused my motorists going off the road trying to pass farm equipment.
I have seen farmers put machinery and life at risk trying to make room for some intolerant boob to pass. And what do they get for their efforts ….. the blaring of a horn and a one finger salute from the car driver as he sprays them with gravel on the way by.
Screw them all. I’m with you on this one. Our roads are clearly marked with signage indicating that slower vehicles may be sharing the road. If some clown fails to recognize that, then that is his/her problem; not the farmer’s.
The farmers always pull over for me though; I drive the school bus and I am never held up for more than a few seconds on my daily route.

The world’s most storied fruit is also among its most versatile cooking ingredients. In these pages, writer and NPR contributor Frank Browning delves into the apple’s long history and his own upbringing on a Kentucky apple orchard, and food writer Sharon Silva recalls her childhood on a Sonoma family farm. Together, they pay homage to the ancient fruit of temptation in this charming illustrated companion to apple and cider cookery. An Apple Harvest is an inviting compendium of more than sixty apple-centric recipes from Alsace to Appalachia, Moscow to Morocco, Bayeux to Berkeley. The feast opens with first courses such as Duck Breast and Fuji Apples on Watercress and Parsnip and Cider Soup, and continues with main dishes like Baltic Roast Goose with Sour Apples and Atlantic Salmon Fillets in Cider-Mustard Sauce. Among the side dishes are classics like Real Applesauce and the curiously named Burning Love. And, of course, an apple book requires a respectable showing of desserts. Bourbon Apple Pie, Classic Tarte Tatin, and Apple Sorbet with Ginger are just three of the tempting offerings. Browning and Silva pepper the collection with spirited musings on whether to peel apples for pies and how to choose apples and store them properly. In a photographic field guide, they share more than two dozen of their favorite apple varieties and detail eating and cooking characteristics, storage qualities, peak season, and growing regions. Engaging storytelling and evocative photography make An Apple Harvest a celebration of the iconic fruit. Stock your pantry with cider and apples and discover for yourself the wildly varied savory and sweet dishes that Braeburns, Cortlands, Macouns, and their brethren can bring to the table.

With a history of childhood loss and tragedy, Arliss Greene grows up to love his cattle more than his family. The memory of his family’s displacement, due to TVA’s construction of Norris Dam, stays with him as he struggles to make a living farming. His son Daniel tries to distance himself, but an inexplicable attachment to East Tennessee causes him to return to the hilltop where he grew up. He is shocked and disappointed when his wife, Leda, a city girl, ends up working with Arliss, farming the family land. Decisions are made, with repercussions that reverberate throughout their lives, the lives of their children, and the life of the farm from the 1930s to the beginning of the new century. Written with an unerring ear for the cadence and language of the South, Harvest is a powerful, character-driven novel. A story of family, marriage, farming, baseball, the power of memory, and what sustains people through loss, Harvest is a reckoning of sacrifices and a testament to human resilience. Catherine Landis, the author of the critically lauded BookSense 76 pick Some Days There’s Pie , has written a compelling new novel with an assured Southern inflection and lovingly rendered three-dimensional characters.

Represented in laconic and poetic prose, Rivera’s characters become indelibly inscribed on the multicultural fabric of American literature.

Harvest: A Year in the Life of an Organic Farm

Harvest: A Year in the Life of an Organic Farm

$5.62

The world of farming–one that is disappearing quickly–informs every aspect of our modern culture, from the food we eat to how we use and preserve the land we live on. Most of us have never set foot on a working farm, however. Now, through insightful prose by journalist Nicola Smith and photographs by Geoff Hansen, readers can enter the life of a couple who believe in the importance of the land and its harvest. It was a dream of Jennifer Megyesi’s to run a farm, and when she and husband, Kyle Jones, founded Fat Rooster Farm, it became a dream come true. By tapping into the public’s desire for organic and artisanal food–and with lucky breaks, such as selling their milk-fed pigs to celebrated chefs like Mario Batali–they are finding some success. The farm embodies both the newer and more traditional faces of farming. Megyesi and Jones are in their early forties, college educated with advanced degrees, well traveled, influenced by the environmental and social movements of the 1960s and ’70s, and savvy in their use of marketing and Internet skills. But in the scale and management of their operation, they revert to an older, more pastoral ideal: sheep out at pasture, chickens that roam free, cows trailed by their calves, hand-gathered honey and maple syrup, their four-year-old son helping with the chores. They’re big enough to grow and sell their own meats, eggs, and vegetables at a modest profit, and small enough to have strong ties to the community. It’s a life worth living–and learning about.

Hardscrabble Harvest

Hardscrabble Harvest

$15.28

Hardscrabble Harvest is a charming story in verse about the running battle between a farm family and the mischievous animals that plunder their fields. Crows peck at freshly sown seeds, ducks eat new strawberry plants, rabbits nibble on tender lettuces, and raccoons dine on ears of ripening corn. All summer long the young farmer and his wife are hard-pressed to protect their growing crops. But autumn comes at last, and the family is ready to celebrate its harvest-bushels of red tomatoes, a cellar full of apples for cider, and pumpkins for pie. In rollicking verse and wonderful illustrations, Dahlov Ipcar tells of all the hard work that goes into making a bountiful fall harvest.

Earth to Table: Seasonal Recipes from an Organic Farm

Earth to Table: Seasonal Recipes from an Organic Farm

$30.21

There is nothing more delightful than a tomato still warm from the sun, or a strawberry so perfectly ripe that it stains your fingers. Why not eat this way all the time? The healthiest and most delicious food comes from farmers and artisans just down the road–though it is often easy to forget when we are surrounded by food shipped to our supermarkets from around the world and by highly processed products from distant factories. Jeff Crump learned of the pleasures of using local cuisine by working in world-famous restaurants like Alice Waters’s Chez Panisse, and he set about to develop a network of farmers to keep his own restaurant’s kitchen humming all year round. It was not long before he was out in the fields himself, alongside pastry chef and collaborator Bettina Schormann, planting and harvesting crops that would form the backbone of their menus, breads, and desserts. Eating locally means eating seasonally, and Jeff and Bettina offer up the most delicious of what each season provides. It could be something as unexpected as Gnudi with Ramps and Morels picked from the woods across the road; as simple and as refreshing as Dandelion Salad; or when it is cold outside, as hearty as Bread and Butter Pudding. "Earth to Table" lets nature write the menu. Tender, green things in spring. Ripe, juicy dishes in summer. The bounty of the harvest in autumn. Rich braises and tart preserves in winter. The result is a year of discovery of new ingredients and dishes, and a rediscovery of classics that suddenly taste the way they were meant to. Bringing together stories of the passage of seasons on the farm; profiles of some of the world’s most innovative chefs–like Heston Blumenthal and Thomas Keller–and the farmers they count on; how-to sections that help readers make the most of the season and what their gardens and farmers’ markets have to offer; stunning photographs; and, of course, creative and delicious recipes that make anyone wonder why they ever considered eating a tomato in February, "Earth to Table" explores what’s best about food.

Harvest the Wind

Harvest the Wind

$27.95

Winds sweeping across the Great Plains once robbed the Farm Belt of its future, stripping away overworked topsoil and creating the dreaded Dust Bowl of the 1930s. Today, those winds are bringing new hope to the declining rural communities of the central United States. Nowhere is wind’s promise more palpable than in Cloud County, Kansas, home to the Meridian Way Wind Farm, whose turbines are boosting farm incomes and bringing green jobs to a community that has watched its children flock elsewhere. Modern wind power is the best thing to hit this stretch of midwestern prairie since the Union Pacific railroad. In Harvest the Wind, Warburg brings us the people behind the green economy-powered resurgence in Cloud County and communities like it across the United States. This corner of Kansas is the first stop on an odyssey that introduces readers to farmers, factory workers, biologists, and high-tech entrepreneurs–all players in a transformative industry that is taking hold across America and around the globe. Harvest the Wind serves as an earthly antidote to the more abstract treatises on global warming and green energy. By showing us how practical solutions are being implemented at the local level, Warburg offers an inspirational look at how we can all pursue a saner and more sustainable energy future.

A shocking blow leaves Carol alone and the future is uncertain. Feeling isolated and with no olives to harvest, Carol ventures beyond the farm to explore other aspects of Provencal life – from hunting to bee-keeping, the ancient language to the ever-present demands of family and friends. Evil Harvest

Evil Harvest

$13.99

On a peaceful August morning in 1985, grim-faced FBI agents led a dawn raid on an eighty-acre farm outside Rulo, Nebraska, said to be occupied by a group of religious survivalists led by the charismatic Mike Ryan. What they found on the farm shocked even experienced investigators. For months Ryan’s Nebraska neighbors spoke in whispers of gunfire in the night, the disappearance of women and children, neo-Nazis and white supremacists. But little did the locals know what was happening to those Mike Ryan decided to punish for their “sins.” In Evil Harvest, Rod Colvin re-creates a chilling story of torture, hate, and perversion, and how good, ordinary people could be pulled into a destructive, religious cult—a cult that committed unthinkable acts in the name of God.
