2 toilet tank crane has a half circle missing where the lid meets the tank?

I have 2 tanks of toilets that have a piece crescent about 1 inch deep by 1 inch wide that are missing from the top where the lid meets the reservoir tank. Seem to be there on purpose in other words, not just a random piece of missing irregular porcelain. Anyone know the purpose of these gaps? Ventilation maybe? slot Crescent is in the back, closer to the wall.
