Can a miscarriage happen without heavy bleeding?

I went for my 12 weeks scan last week only to be told our baby stopped growing at 6 weeks. 3 days later, I started to miscarry. However, I’ve only really had a small amount of brown blood, only been changing the sanitary towel every couple of hours to keep it fresh. Had quite alot of painful cramping, but still no bright red heavy blood. Why is this? Have I still got it all to come, or is this steady light flow of brown blood going to be it?

Yes, you can have a miscarriage without heavy bleeding(soaking more than 2 pads/hour). Some clots are expected, watch for grey tissue. Clots appear more like small pieces of liver. As long as you are having the painful cramping, the body is still trying to clean itself out. Since the pain and bleeding are expected, your doctor should have given you a prescription for analgesia, and guidelines for the amount of bleeding that is acceptable. If you are concerned about anything, please call your doctor. Either he, or his designated information specialist will return the call and answer your questions.
