How do you rat proof a room?

Ok, I want my room to be a free roaming zone for my rat Squeakers. I have allot of wires, and a [trundle] bed that he could possibly get stuck under. How do I make my bedroom safe for a rat? Plus, I don’t want him pooping and peeing all over the place, so I need to learn to litter train him. Should I use the keep away spray for stuff he can get under? I’m completely clueless, help!?!?!?!?!?!

As mentioned, rats generally do not poop and pee all over. That’s not really something to be concerned about.

Secondly, impossible. Rat-proofing, that is. Unless you want to empty your room of everything, and have nothing but flat walls and a plain floor without even carpet.

You can, however, decrease your rat’s risks of getting hurt. They make covers for wires that are designed to keep pets from chewing on them, though rats are notoriously good chewers, and can basically chew through anything. If you can get the wires out of your room to somewhere else, that would be best, otherwise, try to keep them neatly bundled, wrapped, and sectioned off. Supervise loose rat at all times (probably not what you want to hear, but it’s really the best way – they make large, multi-level pet cages that are great for rats when they can’t be out supervised).

He’s unlikely to get himself stuck anywhere, but you can always tightly pack in a towel into any space you think might be difficult to get him out of once he’s in it. Again, crucial to always supervise loose rat.

Do not have ANY cleaners or other such chemicals in your room. Again, rats can chew through just about anything, and no standard bottle is immune to rat chomps.

Ultimately, you’re going to have to accept that he is likely to chew stuff you don’t want him chewing, likely to steal stuff and stash it in little hiding spaces around your room, and likely to get anywhere he wants to get in your room no matter how hard you try to keep him out of places. The main thing going in your favor is that you have a male, which should help make him a little bit more calm and a little less likely to do all those frustrating things rats can do when roaming free. Supervision is key.
