Valencias City and Beaches

Valencia is the third largest city in Spain, home to a total population of 1.17 million inhabitants. The city is situated in the province of the same name on the Mediterranean coast.

As a large city, Valencia offers a wide range of activities, interests for tourists and Valencia hotels, especially since its rapid development from a mainly industrial centre in the early nineties to the vibrant city it has become today. Valencia was the first European city to host the historic America’s Cup yacht race in 2003. The city was more recently awarded this honour for a second time, when it hosted the race again in 2009. 

Of major interest to visiting tourists are the recently restored Serrano and Quart Towers, remnants of the old wall which guarded the medieval city. The Barrio del Carmen district contains many interesting buildings which date back to Roman and Arabic eras. Another important landmark is the Gothic cathedral, built between the 13th and 15th centuries. Of a similar style is the La Lonja de la Seda, which has been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. A popular meeting place for tourists and locals alike is the Placa de la Verge, which contains  the Basilica of the Virgin and the Turia Fountain. Close to all this tourist attractions you will find several Valencia holiday homes.

The city is famous for its vibrant and varied nightlife, which, according to tastes, are concentrated around the Carmen, Canovas and Joan Llorens areas. In the summer the port and beach are also popular places to dance into the early hours. Valencia even boasts its own unofficial cocktail, Agua de Valencia.

Along with the Malvarrosa beach, situated within Valencia, many other popular beaches and resorts can be found along the surrounding Costa del Azahar, or Orange Blossom coast as the name translates in Spanish. In the city of Valencis there are a lot of nice Valencia beach hotels which are situated in a perfect position.

Gandia, which is situated approximately 65 kilometres to the south of Valencia, has a fantastic long, wide, golden sanded beach. The resort  is also renowned for its nightlife, appealing to the real partygoers, carrying on well into the early hours. In contrast, Peniscola is a more sedate resort, mainly attracting families. The resort is dominated by its castle, built on a rocky headland at the end of a sandy causeway.

To the north of Valencia lie the popular resorts of Benicassim and Sagunto, with its ancient remains and partly restored Roman theatre.

Slightly further a field are the popular resorts of Denia and Xabia. In Denia the ruins of the old fortress stand right in the centre of the town’s winding streets. Other than the  beautiful white sandy beach in Xabia, the most prominent landmark here is the 750m Montgo, which dominates the skyline. The mountain forms part of the Montgo Natural Park, which is also well worth a visit, for its variation of flora and fauna. On a clear day, the more energetic and fit tourists can climb Montgo, to enjoy magnificent views across the Mediterranean to the island of Ibiza. There is also a regular ferry service to Ibiza, departing from both resorts.

Valencia and its surrounding beaches and resort have so much to offer the visiting tourists. Cultural, sightseeing and relaxation needs are all catered for in and around this fascinating city which is ideal for a Valencia holiday.
