White Bath Towels

How can I whiten my white bath towels without using bleach?

The towels have black edges on them so I don’t want to risk using bleach on them. I don’t like bleach anyway.

Borax is a good additive; boosts your detergent’s cleaning power. So will washing soda; it’s similar to baking soda but made for laundry.

But before trying those, I’d try adding 1 cup white vinegar to the first rinse cycle. The white vinegar will remove detergent residue and water mineral deposits that can be making the towel less white. And you can use your regular fabric softener in the final rinse and no, the towels won’t smell like pickles after they are dried. Also a wonderful germ killer; the acid in the white vinegar kills ‘em.

If the towels are “bad” it certainly wouldn’t hurt to let them soak in warm water and the white vinegar overnight. It won’t bleach the black either. And hanging them in the sun shine to dry will brighten them also. Just toss in the dryer with a dryer sheet for about 10 minutes and they’ll soften right up.
