Painting is basic when it comes to building a structure whether be it a building or just a house. But before starting on any paint job, applying a primer is very important. A primer is actually a substance that is applied as a preparatory coating before painting. The reason we are doing this is to ensure a better adherence of the paint to the surface. Plus, it enhances the paint durability and gives added protection to the painted material.

Like what was mentioned earlier, a primer is a product that makes the paint adhere more to the painted surface rather than if the paint is used alone. The purpose of the primer is to provide a layer that allows the paint to stick on the surface better. It prepares the wall, for instance to receive the paint. Primers do not need to undergo certain procedures in order for it to have a durable finish but it can be engineered to give it a more improved binding and filling properties so it can make the paint stick to the surface without difficulty. The properties of the primer that are usually controlled in the creating a certain formula are its tackiness, porosity and hygroscopy. Hygroscopy, Wikipedia says is, “the ability of a substance to attract and hold water molecules from the surrounding environment through either absorption or adsorption.”

 

Primers are often used when painting porous materials like concrete and most especially wood. If the material to be painted is at all water resistant and would most probably be exposed to the elements, priming is compulsory. Just like with the gypsum board or drywall. It is the standard operating procedure to prime it because it can seal the wall and prevent molds from forming. Another nice thing about priming is that it can be used for dirty surfaces that cannot be cleaned for some reason and if a dark painted wall be repainted with a lighter shade. Primers can be tinted according to the color of the paint to be used as finish.

 

But it is a different story when it comes to plastic. Since plastic is not so porous, you only prime plastic when necessary like making drastic changes, like repainting a dark wall a lighter shade, for instance. Therefore, choosing the right plastic primer is very important.
