Small-Format Aerial Photography $95.95 As the need for geographical data rapidly expands in the 21 st century, so too do applications of small-format aerial photography for a wide range of scientific, commercial and governmental purposes. Small-format Aerial Photography (SFAP) presents basic and advanced principles and techniques with an emphasis on digital cameras. Unmanned platforms are described in considerable detail, including kites, helium and hot-air blimps, model airplanes, and paragliders. Several case studies, primarily drawn from the geosciences, are presented to demonstrate how SFAP is actually used in various applications. Many of these integrate SFAP with ground-based investigations as well as conventional large-format aerial photography, satellite imagery, and other kinds of geographic information. *Full-color photographs throughout *Case studies from around the globe *Techniques presented allow for image resolution impossible to match via traditional aerial photography or satellite datasets *Glossary clarifies key terms |

Chesapeake: The Aerial Photography of Cameron Davidson $36.4 Nearly 10,000 years ago, rising sea levelsfilled a meteor-impact crater to form the Chesapeake Bay, North America’s largestestuary, and the third largest in the world. The long tendrils of its watershedcover 64,000 square miles and span six states from Virginia to New York. Seventeenmillion people live within its boundaries. There are more than 100,000 streams, creeks, and rivers in the watershed, including 150 major rivers, with names thatconjure ancient voices, such as the Susquehanna, Nanticoke, Mattaponi, andRappahannock. These waters mix with the Atlantic Ocean in a brackish estuary thathelped sustain Native Americans for centuries, but in recent years the bay has comeunder siege from the impacts of increasing population and industry, threatening thisnational treasure. Cameron Davidson has beenshooting aerial photography of the Chesapeake over a period of twenty years. Theview from this privileged vantage point reveals humans’ impact on the land and thewater. It yields an abstract beauty that is seldom seen, from the seven bends of theShenandoah River to the important marshlands and islands of the watershed.Davidson’s lens captures the changing seasons traced from the headwaters of theSusquehanna at Otsego Lake in Cooperstown, New York, to the mouth of the bay atVirginia Beach. Davidson’s poetic pictures bear witness to the bay’s vulnerabilityand the fragility of its future. Davidson’sstunning full-color photography is arranged geographically and accompanied by thewords of David Fahrenthold, who has written extensively about the Chesapeake Bay andother environmental topics for the "WashingtonPost." |

The Early Development of Irish Society: The Evidence of Aerial Photography $29.75 The technique of aerial photography, widely recognized as of immense value to field archaeologists, had been little used in Ireland, although the relatively slight disturbance of land by modern ploughing or industrial development makes Ireland a particularly suitable region for the identification of ancient features by this method. The results of the surveys carried out by the Cambridge Committee for Aerial Photography between 1963 and 1968 are nevertheless surprising. Many ancient earthworks have been revealed by differences in soil-colour or crop-growth, and the natural and man-made environments of these and other prehistoric and early Christian settlements can be fully appreciated. The pattern of settlement emerges over a wide area, as does the character of large and complex sites such as Tara, while detailed oblique views pick out smaller structures invisible on the ground. |

A History of Aerial Photography and Archaeology: Mata Hari’s Glass Eye and Other Stories $38.35 The first aerial photographs of an archaeological monument in Britain are inevitably of Stonehenge. How a single balloon flight and the resulting photographs fit into the context of the history of aerial photography is revealed in this fascinating new book. During the First World War, the true potential of aerial photography as a reconnaissance technique was realised. The Second World War saw even greater resources invested in aerial photography and the training of skilled specialist staff to interpret the millions of photographs taken from aircraft. After the First World War it became apparent how techniques developed within the context of warfare could serve non-military uses, including archaeology. Between the wars, aerial photography had a considerable impact on our understanding of the past, particularly once the significance and extent of cropmarks became apparent – the airborne camera could record sites and landscapes that were often invisible from the ground. As examples of recent and current archaeological work are explored, it becomes apparent just how far we have progressed in the use of aerial photography to record and interpret past landscapes. The book includes 200 colour and black and white photographs, ranging from images of early balloon exploits and intriguing photographs from the Boer War to reconnaissance views from the World Wars and modern aerial shots of archaeological sites. |

Photography and Flight $33.95 Used for everything from geographic evaluation to secret spy missions, aerial photography has a rich and storied history, ably recounted here in Photography and Flight . Aerial photography is marked by its dependency on technological developments in both photography and aerospace, and the authors chart the history of this photography as it tracked the evolution of these technologies. Beginning with early images taken from hot-air balloons, fixed platforms, and subsequent handheld camera technology, Denis Cosgrove and William Fox then explain how military reconnaissance and governmental projects were instrumental in catalyzing these and other innovations in the field. They examine pivotal historical moments in which aerial photography began to establish itself as essential tool, such as in World War II military strategies, high-altitude photography taken from postwar rockets and aircraft, and the use of aerial photography during the cold war and the Cuban Missile Crisis. The book also explores the advancement of geographic scholarship through aerial photography, ranging from military excursions into Antarctica to the images of the curvature of the earth taken during the Apollo space missions. While digital technology and remote sensing have changed the landscape of photography, Photography and Flight argues that they have not diminished the significance of aerial photography in providing images of the earth. Rather, new technologies and resulting innovations such as Google Earth have enabled the mass democratization of access to such information. Photography and Flight ultimately reveals how the camera lens from far away continues to unearth telling details about the land and those who live upon it.   |

Wisconsin Dells $19.72 The native people called this area Nish-ha-ki-sunch-la. Today it is known as the Wisconsin Dells, a beautiful five-mile gorge along the Wisconsin River. This book captures all that beauty in vintage postcards. Included are famous rock formations and towering sandstone cliffs such as Cold Water Canyon, Romance Cliff, Chimney Rock, Witches Glutch, Hawks Bill, and Baby Grand Piano, just to name a few. Readers will view scenes of riverboats, canoeists, native dancers, and even a young man and a dog leaping perilously to Stand Rock. The Ho-Chunk (Winnebago) Indians are featured in the land they call home. Wisconsin Dells began catering to tourists in the mid-19th century. Many of the postcards are based on the photography of H. H. Bennett, whose work from 1865 to 1907 is credited for turning the Dells into Wisconsins top tourist destination. |
