this is an old solid wood piece of furniture that I am converting into an island.It already has casters and a solid wood top with a slight overhang but it does not extend quite far enough to be functional and to slide stools under/ how far wold I go to be functional bt not look lopsided I will have to special order the piece sorry kes messing p

Well..”how far wold I go to be functional bt not look lopsided” is a lot less important
than how far out can you go and still have it stable enough for safety.
Somebody, sometime is going to rest his full weight on the outside of that overhang.
Design for that based on how wide the base of the piece measures, and how
much it weighs.
14-16″ is usually enough to ‘slide stools under’ for a ‘counter top high’ piece,
more, 18-20″ for a ‘table top high’ piece.
You will probably want to completely replace the old top rather than
affix the new one on top of it.
If it’s quality wood you might want to save it for another use.
