It can easily be gold plated with a base metal like lead or zinc?

I'm trying to be technically accurate in a story I'm developing involving the smuggling of gold. The process of hiding whould have to be relatively simple. for example, no gaint metal factory or large quantities of chemicals and energy. Something could be done in a small warehouse. His technique of a devious mind will be appreciated.

Gold smuggling is a bit difficult because its considerable weight. There is no way to hide the weight. I probably dissolve gold in nitric acid, then pour the solution in some export low value, and handle a few tons of rock or sand or sandstone (adding a little glue to the sand). Then wash the gold out of solution at the other end and preciitate gold with something alkaline, like lye.
